He had started his career as a poster boy who made calligraphy for western films. He also did some acting before switching to direction. He introduced music mastero late Naushad, Majrooh SUltanpuri and Actress Suraiya. Late M. Rafi’s song Suhani raat dhal chuk from Dulari is still well known.
